Design and Scale-Up of Algal Growth Systems for HighDensity Biomass Production

The production of algal biomass has gained significant attention due to its potential in renewable energy, food, and pharmaceutical applications. This paper focuses on the design and scale-up of algal growth systems aimed at achieving high-density biomass production. We explore various system designs, operational parameters, and the challenges associated with scaling from laboratory to industrial-scale production. The review highlights current technologies, identifies optimization techniques, and addresses economic feasibility. The results suggest that photobioreactors (PBRs) and open pond systems offer promising avenues for achieving large-scale, cost-effective biomass production. However, achieving consistent highdensity cultures at large scales remains a challenge. Our findings indicate that optimizing light utilization, nutrient management, and CO2 supply are critical factors for successful scale-up. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research directions to improve the scalability and economic viability of algal biomass production systems.
