Abstract

Nutrient recovery from wastewater has become a critical issue in the context of environmental sustainability and resource management. With increasing global concern over the depletion of natural resources and pollution caused by wastewater discharge, efficient methods for nutrient recovery are in demand. Among the various methods, catalysis-based approaches have emerged as promising technologies for the recovery of key nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. These catalysts can facilitate the conversion of pollutants into valuable byproducts, enabling both environmental protection and the recovery of essential nutrients. This manuscript explores the potential of various catalytic processes for nutrient recovery in wastewater treatment, with a particular focus on their mechanisms, efficiencies, and applications. The role of biological, chemical, and electrochemical catalysis in facilitating nutrient recovery is examined, with case studies and experimental data to support the effectiveness of these technologies. Furthermore, the manuscript investigates the challenges and opportunities in scaling these catalytic processes for industrial applications, offering insights into future trends in nutrient recovery for sustainable wastewater management.
